Sister mother warrior : a novel Cover Image Book Book

Sister mother warrior : a novel / Vanessa Riley.

Riley, Vanessa, (author.).

Summary:

Gran Toya: Born in West Africa, Adbaraya Toya was one of the legendary minos, specially chosen female warriors consecrated to the king of Dahomey. Betrayed by an enemy and sold into slavery, Toya wound up in Saint-Domingue, where she became a healer and an authority figure on the island's plantations. Among the motherless children she raised was the revolutionary Jean-Jaques Dessalines. When the enslaved people rose up, Toya, ever the warrior, was at the forefront of the rebellion that changed the course of history. Marie-Claire: A free woman of color, Marie-Clair Bonheur was raised in security and privilege, but with a keen sense of justice. Falling in love with Jean-Jacques Dessalines was never the plan, yet their paths continued to cross and intertwine, drawing her into the heat of battle. Despite their deep differences, Marie-Claire and Toya play pivotal roles in the revolution that will eventually lead to full independence for Haiti and its people.
